The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition, RISE Counseling and Consulting, and Midland Community School District are partnering together on a public event at Midland Middle/High School at 106 W. Webster Street in Wyoming on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, during Parent-Teacher Conferences.
The evening includes a Health Fair from 4:30-6 pm with 14 different local agencies sharing their resources for families, a free dinner from 5-6 pm provided by the Coalition, and a viewing of the inspiring documentary film, “My Ascension” the true story about Emma Benoit, starting at 6. RISE Counseling and Consulting is sponsoring the film showing, and will lead a discussion following the film with the evening ending by 7:30 pm.
Midland secondary school counselor Mrs. Lasack says “I will personally say that I have seen this film and it is very inspiring!”
At 16 years old, varsity cheerleader Emma attempted to end her life. The film is the story of the day that changed Emma’s life, and everything that has happened since. For years, Emma quietly struggled with anxiety and depression, too ashamed to share her pain with family or friends. Through navigating the challenges of recovery, she discovers purpose and passion in helping other struggling teens. My Ascension includes firsthand experiences of families, friends, school officials, and suicide prevention experts. The film does not shy away from the difficult realities of the ongoing youth suicide crisis, but shares valuable resources to help keep teens safe.
The Coalition will also sponsor a drawing for two $500 scholarships for 9th-12th grade students to put towards their post-secondary education. RISE will also be giving away four $50 Amazon gift cards. The event is open to everyone and particularly good for parents to attend with their middle and high school age youth.
