Midland Ag/Science Teacher Jamie Christiansen was named the national recipient of the 2024 CASE Innovation Award and accepted the award on October 23rd at the FFA National Convention.
Jamie said “The application included showing how innovation practices have been implemented in the program. The things that I focussed on in the application was the ARD project that Jayda Thomsen and Hannah Fishwild did in collaboration with Eli Slouha. They completed tests to evaluate the difference between Eli’s Berkshire pork and pork purchased from Walmart and Fareway. I also discussed how we used scientific methods to determine the preferred salinity percentage as we made and smoked homemade bacon. I have been contacted by a writer for Venier for a blog they are writing and the Eastern Iowa Farmer for their March edition.”
The presenter from CASE Learning said “Jamie Christiansen’s work at Midland High School showcases the impact of innovative teaching in agricultural education. Since embracing the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) in 2011, Jamie has redefined student engagement through hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences. Her approach has fundamentally changed how students connect with agricultural science.”
“A key innovation in Jamie Christiansen’s teaching is her ability to adapt the standard CASE curriculum to fit the unique needs of her program and community. By focusing on experiential learning, she has created an engaging environment where students connect directly with their studies. For instance, in the Food Science and Safety course, Jamie guided students in developing a BBQ sauce, allowing them to apply scientific principles while addressing local culinary interests. This hands-on project deepened their understanding and earned accolades at local contests, including recognition at the Iowa State Fair.”
“Technology integration plays a crucial role in enhancing Jamie Christiansen’s program. By leveraging social media and school newsletters, she highlights student achievements and demonstrates how the CASE curriculum aligns with community interests. This visibility has shifted perceptions among skeptics, including school administrators, who now recognize the program’s value. Through her innovative practices, Jamie not only delivers the CASE curriculum but also tailors it to enrich student learning and strengthen community ties.”
“Jamie also emphasizes collaboration with local industries and universities, giving students real-world insights and experiences. These partnerships enhance the curriculum and equip students with essential skills like teamwork and problem-solving.”
“Through her innovative practices, Jamie Christiansen is transforming agricultural education at Midland High School. Her commitment to hands-on learning, technology integration, and community collaboration is a powerful example for educators, demonstrating how creative approaches can prepare students for the future.”
Midland School Board Member Patti Whitmarsh said “Congratulations Jamie! Well deserved! Midland is fortunate to have you as an educator and we appreciate your ongoing innovation and creativity in challenging students to enhance their learning in a transformative nature.”
She was presented a plaque as well as an engraved brick which will be placed at the National FFA Center in her honor. We are excited that some of her FFA students were there for the presentation.
We are proud of Jamie’s accomplishments and her innovation in her teaching techniques at Midland. She is providing her students hands on learning that will serve them for a lifetime. She is sparking interest in new areas. Thanks Jamie for all you do for your students and our District. The Midland FFA chapter has grown by leaps and bounds since she took over and we are excited about that for all of our students!
Congratulations Jamie, keep up the great work!
