Leader in Me

Growing Leaders, Building Character

At Midland Community School District, Leader in Me is a school-wide program that helps students build leadership skills, responsibility, and strong character. The program helps students set goals, work with others, and take ownership of their learning while building a positive school culture where every student is encouraged to grow as a leader.

We have made a strong start in developing leadership qualities among our staff and students while strengthening connections with families and community partners.

A second grader proudly uses a Leader in Me Binder to share learning with parents during Student-Led Conferences, giving students the opportunity to take ownership and lead the conversation!

A true example of following the Leader! After one fifth grader stepped up to lead second graders in action songs, several of her classmates recognized the opportunity and joined her on a different day. The true impact came from students seeing a need, taking initiative, and choosing to lead on their own.

During our first Family Leadership Night, one family chose “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” as their Family Theme Song, celebrating the strength, support, and connection that guide their family.

Our Student Lighthouse Team learned about a 4-year-old girl in another community who was diagnosed with cancer and planted a flower garden as a way to spread hope. To show their support, students created their own act of kindness. With flower pots, flowers, and rocks donated by a parent of an SLT member, students added inspirational messages to the rocks for the young girl to place in her garden at home.

Students took the lead by turning an idea into action! When they wanted to read with a buddy during a pajama dress-up day, they organized the event for the entire school, creating a fun opportunity to build connections and celebrate reading together.

A Midland fifth grader saw an opportunity to lead and asked if she could share finger plays and action songs with the second graders. With lunch finished and students waiting for their teacher, she stepped in to help keep everyone engaged, bringing energy, joy, and leadership to the moment.
