Becoming a substitute teacher is a great way to support local schools with a flexible schedule. You can often choose which days to accept, making it a flexible opportunity for people between jobs, retired educators, parents with young children, or anyone looking for rewarding work in education.
You may qualify if you:
• Have an associates degree or at least 60 semester hours of college credit.
• Complete an approved Iowa Substitute Authorization course. (Educators who already have a teaching license need not receive a substitute authorization.)
• Complete Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training.
• Pass the required background check and fingerprinting.
• Apply through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE).
What options will you have?
- Substitute in PK–12 classrooms.
- Teach any subject except driver’s education.
- Serve as a short-term substitute (generally up to 10 consecutive days in the same
assignment unless extended).
How to get started substitute teaching in Iowa
- Enroll in an approved Substitute Authorization course.
- Complete required training.
- Apply with the BOEE.
- Complete fingerprinting/background check.
- Apply with your local school district(s).
